Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson

Maamar Zeh Hayom, by Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, delivered on Rosh Hashanah 5741 (1980) and published in 5748 (1987).

In translation by Noah Shavrick azkf@comcast.net

1)            “This is the day of the beginning of your actions, a remembrance to the first day.” And it is known, that the plain usage of the term “HaYom (The day)” refers to Rosh Hashanah.  The meaning of “Zeh (This) is the day” is that on the day of Rosh Hashanah there is drawn out  the aspect of “This”; since on Rosh Hashanah the Bnei Yisroel crown Hakadosh Baruch Hu as the King and they actively cause the revelation of His Malchus, may He be blessed, throughout the entire world, to the point that “everything made will know that You have made it,”  that even the aspect of what is made in Asiyah (and certainly in Yetsirah and Beriyah) they will know that You have made them.  This is the meaning of “This is the day,” that on Rosh Hashanah, G-dliness is drawn out in a literal revelation, to the point of “This”, where each person can point with their finger and say, “Zeh (This)”. We can say that this is also the explanation that is said about the day of Rosh Hashanah, “This is the day of the beginning of your actions,” for we know the specific explanation about this from the Alter Rebbe, the Mitteler Rebbe, the Tzemach Tzedek, the Maharash, the Rashab, and my father-in-law the Rebbe, the Nasi of our generation, that on the 25th of Elul, the world was created, while Rosh Hashanah is the day Adam Harishon was created, which was the 6th day of creation.  So how can we say about this day that it was the beginning of your actions?   Also, why is Rosh Hashanah on the 1st of Tishrei and not on the 25th of Elul?  Furthermore, on Rosh Hashanah, “All those who have come to the world will pass before You like a flock of sheep,” not just human beings, but also the creations from the level of the animals, plants and minerals, so why is Rosh Hashanah specifically on the day of the creation of man?  (more…)

Sanctifying the New Month (and Moon)
From the Siddur of the Arizal, Kol Yaakov, Rabbi Yaakov Koppel Lifshitz (early 1700’s)
Translated by Rabbi Noah Shavrick

The Kabbalistic secret of sanctifying the new month contains many great secrets.  It requires a very expansive explanation.  However, we will not elaborate here, except for what is necessary to our topic.  I will explain only the primary points, and from them will be explained many secrets and wonders from our Holy Torah.  The following will be explained:
1)    the secret of sanctifying the new month (and moon), which can only be done after six days (from the beginning of the month), but in a difficult time, it can be sanctified after three days (from the beginning of the month), like during the rainy season, when there are many clouds, and there is a concern not to pass the time limit for sanctifying, which is after fourteen days (from the beginning of the month).
2)     the reason why there is a time limit, which cannot be passed, and why we cannot sanctify the new month immediately (at the beginning of the month), when it becomes new.
3)    also, many other things.
It will all be explained from within the explanation, in a brief manner. (more…)

Kabbalah blogging back in action! Why Moses hit the Rock. Insights into the Ramban, Chassidus and Kabbalah

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

In memory of Uncle Joe Shavrick, 8 Tammuz 5767
Over this past Shabbos Parshas Chukas, I had the opportunity to contemplate the various interpretations of Moshe’s striking the rock and the ensuing consequences.  In particular, the Ramban discounts most of the commentaries and concludes his explanation with a great “secret” from Kabbalah. The Ramban only uses the term Sod when he is referring to a Kabbalistic secret he had received from his teachers, and he religiously protected the secrets by only divulging the minimum to get his point across.
Reb Chaim Vital writes that his Rebbi, the Arizal, said that the commentary of the Ramban on the Torah is very deep and there is no one who is able to understand it, since his words are extremely obscured and it is a very precious and beloved book to those who delve into it.
The students of the Ramban and the kabbalists of the following generations, such as Reb Yitzchak of Acco, Kesser Shem Tov, Ibn Sahula, Rabbeinu Bechayay, Rekanati (and Levush) and Tzioni, revealed only minor points, leaving the rest hidden, as stated by the Arizal.
The Ramban on Chukas 20:8 is readily available in Hebrew and English, so I will not quote it here, but I will offer some possible insights. (more…)

Metatron - Enoch

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2006

Q: Was Enoch turned into the angel Metatron?
A: Chanoch (Enoch) was a great Tzaddik according to most sources, he was a shoemaker and with each stitch he united the worlds and Hashem, so when the world turned further evil, Hashem removed him from the world, alive, and turned him into the angel Metatron, who is so Holy we do not pronounce his name.

Belief and questions of Faith

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2006

(In response to a believer with questions)

Just a few notes: Every Jew is a believer, the child of believers. We naturally have the belief in G-d. You have this faith from birth and can never lose it. What you question are concepts. So if G-d were a concept or light or energy etc., then you would be right to question it and ask for proof.

Energy, Light, God?

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2006

Q: How to define the Creator of the Universe or comprehend the Creator of the universe.
Basically there is this struggle with What is God? Is it light, energy?

A: Hashem, the Creator, is neither light nor energy. This is a mistaken influence from Eastern and even Greek teachings. Both light and energy are substances, no matter how refined. They are substances of this world.

Evil Spirits and Possession

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2006

Q: Noah, can you explain to me to the best of your knowledge how people become possessed by evil spirits.
A: People are so filled with their own evil spirit, there may not be room for others, lol. Possessions seem uncommon in our times, since there are not many righteous souls who can even identify such possessions. Also, physical or mental illness could be spirits or it may not be. Most of the religious world today pays little, if no attention, to spirits.

A Beautiful Story

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2006

(Thanks HB!)
In the summer of 2000, 16-year-old Mordechai Kaler volunteered to help in the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington in Rockville, MD. One of his responsibilities was to invite the residents to attend the daily services (minyan) in the synagogue on the first floor. Some agreed and others refused, but even those who declined were pleasant about it.

Chanukah, History and Astrology from Kabbalah

Written by Rabbi Yosef Shani in the book Shaar Yosef (1983), Israel.
(translated by Noah Shavrick)
(Disclaimer by the translator!) The conclusions herein are questionable, especially as to their source. All Kabbalah must be transmitted from teacher to student. New, innovative, novel conclusions could be quite incorrect and harmful to the development of one’s character. In addition, please be very aware that the planets, stars, etc. have no independent control over the world, only G-d does.

Kabbalah and Chassidus - Why did G-d create the world?

Tuesday, December 13th, 2005

Maamar –Reasons for Creation – by Rabbi Schneur Zalman, the Baal HaTanya. (First printed from a manuscript, which belonged to the son-in-law of the Baal HaTanya, in Lehaskilcha Binah, Kfar Chabad, Israel, 1976, page 3; reprinted in Maamarei Admur Hazakain, Inyanim, Kehot,1983, page 95.) (Translated and elucidated from the Hebrew by Noah Shavrick) (Questions or comments to AZKF@comcast.net)

Behold! All of the reasons, which are explained about the intent of the creation (of the world), which are: “it is from the nature of the Good One to do good,” and also “to convert the darkness to light, since the superiority of the light (comes from the contrast with darkness) etc.,” (these reasons) do not apply except after the death of the (primordial) Kings, which is when “Mah” and “Ban” mixed, and from this was the root of the darkness.
